Tavira is a coastal city in the Algarve, southern region of Portugal, famous for its Moorish architecture. Fondly called Venice of Algarve, the city lies across the river Gilao that meets the Atlantic Ocean here. Tavira was under Arab rule from the 8th to the 13th century. Knights of the Order of Santiago conquered it in 1242. It was the main trading port of the Algarve between the 16th and the 18th century. Products like dried fish, wine and salt were mainly shipped from here. The city survived the 1755 earthquake and 18th century architecture and 37 churches replaced the destroyed structures.
